Motorists running the red light at the intersection of Connecticut and Knowles avenues in Kensington will soon find themselves the subject of an unwanted snapshot.
Kensington Town Councilman Al Carr was recently notified that the county will install a photo enforcement camera within the next month at the intersection. The camera will takes pictures of cars that do not stop for the red light, and a traffic citation will be mailed to the vehicle owner's home.
"It's great to have it because that's the most dangerous intersection we have," Carr said.
In 2003, he said there were 11 accidents recorded at that intersection.
Mike Kinney, an engineer in the Division of Operations in the county's Department of Public Works and Transportation, said the camera should be operational within the month.
Currently, he said the county has 31 such cameras in service and that they have proven to reduce the number of incidents of running red lights.
Generally, Kinney said red-light cameras are installed as a last resort if traffic engineers cannot figure out an engineering reason why so many people are running the light at an intersection.
"If we can't figure out another reason, that's when we put in a camera," Kinney said.
The county has had red-light cameras since 1999.
