Through the five weeks of the Prince-Mont Summer Swim League season, the Belair Swim and Racquet team went undefeated in division A. Saturday morning, the Barracudas again proved best over their five foes in the Divisionals at Belair Bath and Tennis, although each team had noteworthy performances.
BSR won the overall event with 269 points, followed by Whitehall Pool and Tennis (198), Belair Bath and Tennis (169), West Laurel Swim Club (155.5), Takoma Park (155.5) and Temple Hills (153).
Youth was served well for BSR, and a number of swimmers from all six teams will convene at the all-star meet this Saturday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
Temple Hills' Tim Hodge won the 9-10 boys' 25 butterfly (17.80 seconds), Carl Ward won the 15-18 boys' 50 fly (28.35). Liz Husson took the 15-18 girls' 50 breaststroke (36.37) by more than two seconds. Jeff Gilbert, a 2002 Star/Gazette first-team choice from Oxon Hill, captured the 15-18 boys' 50 backstroke (32.07) by two-tenths of a second.
Among BSR's victories, Michael Cooke, competing in the boys' 9-10 events, won twice. Cooke downed TH's Patrick Husson by six-tenths of a second in the 50 freestyle (34.33), nipped Takoma's Kristopher Drummond by nearly three-tenths of a second in the 25 breast (21.25) but settled for second behind BBT's Paul Gannett in the 25 back.
Sharks place fourth at B Divisionals
After winning all five of its dual meets during the regular season, Cheverly Swim and Racquet was looking to put the finishing touches on its summer in Saturday's Prince-Mont Swim League B Divisionals at Strathmore Bel Pre Pool in Silver Spring.
Among CSR's many wins, Sam Schachter began his morning by taking the 9-10 boys' 25-meter butterfly (19.51) in a three-way thriller. He finished sixth in the 50 free, then finished second to Fort Washington's Brian Stickell in the 25 back.
Fort Washington had several swimmers shine at the divisional meet. Colleen McFadden captured the 11-12 girls' 50 fly (37.58, a personal best) by nearly a full second, was a close second in the 50 free then finished second in the 100 individual medley.
Dakota Hinely defeated SBP's Tommy Martinson by nearly a full second in the boys' 8-and-under 25 free (19.04), but Martinson repaid the favor as he finished first and Hinely was second in the 25 breast. But Hinely ended up taking two out of three from Martinson as the Fort Washington swimmer won the 25 back.
Nicole Scott took the 9-10 girls' 50 free (36.81) by more than a full second ans also won the back, while Stickell edged Schachter in the 25 back.
Several other FW Sharks also had solid performances. Bryson Stewart finished second in the 15-18 boys' fly (29.35), then later won the 50 back (29.83, a personal best). Mark Buda finished second in the 11-12 boys' 50 breast (45.38). Daniel Leighton took second -- beaten by merely one-tenth of a second -- in the 13-14 boys' 50 back (37.60). Spencer Bailey was a runner-up swimmer in the breast.
Surratts Swim Club is third at F Divisionals
The Surratts Swim Club may have finished third overall in the F Divisionals they hosted last weekend, but the team had several solid efforts from youthful and veteran swimmers alike.
Stacy Johnson, competing in the girls' 15-18 division, captured the 50-meter butterfly (34.34) by nearly three seconds, took the 50 backstroke (38.46) by nearly two seconds then finished third behind Indian Head's Heather Hamor and Laurel City's Kerrece Griffith in the 100 Individual Medley.
Nicholas Willoughby, participating in the boys' 9-10 bracket, captured the 25 breaststroke (23.20) by nearly three seconds over teammate Robert Patterson. He had earlier finished sixth in the 25 fly and later took third in the 25 back (24.27). Patterson also placed fifth in the 50 freestyle.
Ryan Harris captured the 11-12 boys' 50 back (41.91) by more than eight seconds and finished second in the 100 IM.
