In the next-to-last meet of the regular season, the Fort Washington Sharks dropped a competitive meet to Strathmore Bel Pre last Saturday, falling 277-264 in a Prince-Mont Swim League event.
Strathmore took the lead for good after the individual medleys following a see-saw battle.
The Sharks led after the butterfly events and maintained that advantage through the freestyle races. Strathmore took control after the breastroke events, but the Sharks rallied back during the backstroke. With the score changing hands throughout the morning, Strathmore finally took the lead after the individual medleys.
Overall for the Sharks, the meet provided them with more winners thanfrom any other meet this summer. Nicole Scott, Colleen McFadden and Bryson Stewart led the way with three wins apiece. Dakota Hinely, Jonathon Brevard, Brian Stickell and Spencer Bailey were all double winners, while Erin Dullahan, Rachel LaRoque, Daniel Leighton, Nick Ruehe, Lauren Stewart and Prescott Stewart each had a win apiece.
Cheverly downs Fort Washington
Through the first three weeks of the Prince-Mont Summer Swim League, the Cheverly Swim and Racquet Club has won two of three meets in Division B action, including a narrow 275-264 victory over Fort Washington on July 6.
Cheverly swimmers won exactly half of the 44 individual events and one of the three relays, but it gained the upper hand by gaining a 28-19 advantage in second- and fourth-place finishes. Fort Washington owned a 28-19 edge in third-place finishes.
One of CSR's youngest swimmers helped get the team headed in the right direction. Sam Schachter, competing in the boys' 9-10 division, completed a triple -- his second of the season -- against Fort Washington. Schachter took the 25-yard butterfly (19.08) over teammate Patrick Malone, downed teammate Max Allegro in the 50 freestyle (38.73) then nipped teammate Ryan Langlois by one-tenth of a second in the 25 breaststroke (24.22).
Nicole Langlois, participating in the 11-12 girls' division, also earned a hat trick against Fort Washington. She downed the Sharks' Colleen McFadden by more than a second in the 50 fly (37.93), whipped teammate Michelle Enkiri by nearly nine seconds in the 50 backstroke (40.69) and completed her triple by thumping teammate Katie Wilson by more than eight seconds in the 100 individual medley (1:30.79). It was Langlois's second triple this summer.
Not to be outdone, Danny Harn captured three events in the boys' 13-14 division. Harn took the 50 free (30.75) by more than a full second over FW's Leighton, edged the Sharks' Prescott Stewart to claim the 50 breast (42.25) then defeated teammate Joshua Soble by more than four seconds to take the 100 IM (1:20.49).
Melanie Chambers followed suit by taking three events in the girls' 13-14 category. Chambers edged FW's Rachel McFadden by two-tenths of a second to claim the 50 free (31.80), nipped the Sharks' Laroque by a similar margin in the 50 breast (43.84) then whipped them both by five and nine seconds, respectively, in the 100 IM (1:21.10).
Joanna Mantello won two events and finished fourth in another while competing in the girls' 15-18 bracket. Mantello out-touched FW's Lauren Stewart by two one-hundredths of a second to take the 50 fly (36.29), downed teammate Holly Ahearn by nearly a full second in the 100 free (1:11.90) but settled for fourth in the 50 back (40.10). Stewart won that event to avenge her earlier narrow setback.
Holly Ahearn rebounded from a second-place finish behind Mantello in the 100 free to capture the 15-18 girls' 50 breast (40.59) by more than two seconds and then annexed the 100 IM (1:21.47) by more than six seconds.
Erica Tremble also just missed earning a triple in the girls' 9-10 events. She captured the 25 fly (19.44) by nearly a second, finished second to FW's Scott in the 50 free (39.27) then defeated the Sharks' Meghan Bonomo by more than a full second in the 25 breast (25.54).
Chris Chambers won one event and finished second in two others in the 15-18 boys' division. He captured the 100 free (1:01.02) by more than five seconds. Colin Taylor won the 11-12 boys' 50 fly (50.33) then finished third in the 50 free and second in the 100 IM.
One week earlier, Cheverly suffered a 287-248 setback to Westlake Village after opening the season with a 313-208 victory over Greenbelt Municipal. Cheverly won 29 of the 44 individual events against Greenbelt. Melanie Chambers has compiled three triples in three weeks, while Schachter has won eight of nine events thus far.
