Gordon's Karate Zone, a new karate training center, opened last week in Germantown and owner Jeff Gordon said he hopes the business will have a significant impact on the community.

The center, located at 13404 Kingsview Village Ave. in Kingsview Village Shopping Center, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Classes will be offered for people ages 5 and older.

"The most important thing is that we focus on character, self-respect, discipline, as well as building confidence," said Gordon, a Gaithersburg resident. "As a child, I had attention deficit disorder, and martial arts helped me out with my focus. There was a need to focus on a teacher and to develop skills."

According to Gordon, who is a third-degree black belt, martial arts was responsible for significant changes in his life; it enabled him to travel, make close friends and most of all, build his confidence.

"Martial arts changed my life and helped me find out who I was, and I want to provide that opportunity for others," he said.

Gordon, who previously owned the Budget Rent-A-Car franchise in Prince George's County, said he left the business because he did not feel he was having a strong enough impact on the community.

"I want to really help people," said Gordon, who became involved in martial arts at the age of 17. "I want to teach people character development and self-confidence."

In order to accomplish his goals, Gordon said he plans to provide free monthly self-defense classes for women beginning this fall. Gordon said he also hopes to be able to give scholarships to children who cannot afford classes.

He also plans to offer a life protection arts class for adults.
