The third annual Bug Day and Bug Night will bring two days of hikes, games, crafts and other activities for children to Little Bennett Regional Park Aug. 8-9.
In past years, Bug Day has taken place during one day. However, in order to enable people to experience more activities, organizers spread out the event over two days this year.
"It was too much to fit in one day," explained park naturalist Denise Gibbs, who is leading the "Winged Wonders Butterfly Hike" on Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. "People complained that they wanted to go to more events, but that there was not enough time, so we extended it to two days."
One of the additions to this year's event is the "Big Bug Browse and Breakfast," which begins at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8 and is the first activity of the day. At the activity, children ages 5-10, along with an adult, will be able to build a grasshopper, make beetle cookies and drink "bug" juice. Afterwards the group will go outside with nets to find insects.
"I think that anyone who goes to the bug breakfast will have a great time," said park naturalist Fawn Foerster, who is leading the "Insect Bath Fizzies" craft project on Aug. 8 at 12:30 p.m.
While there is a small cost for most of the activities, such as a $3 fee for the breakfast, the Bugtime Theatre, which runs from 10:45 a.m. to noon and 12:30-6 p.m. on Aug. 8 is free. Children of all ages will be able to enjoy insect videos at this activity.
At the same time as the Bugtime Theatre, "Critter Mask Making And Crayon Craze" will be taking place. It is for children ages 3-12 with an adult and costs $2.
One of the highlights of the event will be the outdoor/indoor bug games that begin at 2 p.m. on Aug. 8. Games include insect charades, meal worm races, hidden insect hike, and roach in the rink. The games are for children ages 5 and older and adults. The cost is $4.
Thursday's activities take place in the evening beginning at 6 p.m. with insect relays with prizes. The free activity is for children ages 5-12. A glow in the dark T-shirt craft will take place following the relays for a $3 fee. It is open to children ages 5-12 with an adult.
The final activity is "Buggy Night With Smithsonian Bug People," which starts at 8:30 p.m. It will consist of a night hike with a visit to the special ultraviolet light insect collectors. The free activity is for children ages 5 and older as well as adults.
Because of limited space, children under 3 years old and strollers will not be allowed at events. Snacks and drinks will be available at the campground's contact station.
